BRIEF HISTORY OF LAGOS ISLAND DISTRICT

Foursquare Gospel Church, Lagos Island, now Lagos Island District was pioneered in 1983 by Surulere Foursquare Gospel Church under the able leadership of our former General Overseer emeritus, Rev’d Dr. Gabriel Olusoji Farombi.
The pioneering Pastor was Rev’d. & Rev’d (Mrs) Felix Oke. They started the pioneering work at Edward Balden Memorial Primary School, Okesuna before moving to the present location at Igbosere Road.
Rev’d. & Rev’d (Mrs). Felix Oke served as senior Pastor from 193 to 1994. In October 1994 the Church became a Zone and Rev’d & Rev’d Mrs, Oke served as Zonal Superintendent up till 2000.
In 2000 our immediate past General Overseer, Rev’d. Dr. Wilson A. Badejo upgraded the Lagos Island Zone to a District.
In 2001, the Late Rev’d. Patrick Olakulehin and his wife Rev’d. (Mrs) Lola Olakulehin were installed as the pioneering District Overseer. They served from 2001 to 2003. He was followed by Rev’d & Rev’d (Mrs) Ben Taiwo who served as Acting District Overseer, Zonal Superintendent and Senior pastor from 2002-2003
Rev’d. & Rev’d  (Mrs) Tony Nwanma were installed as District Overseer, Zonal Superintendent and Senior Pastor of Lagos Island District, and they served from 2003 to 2009. They were followed by Rev’d & Rev’d (Mrs) Gbenga Oshokoya as District Overseer and Senior Pastor from 2009 to 2011.
Rev’d. & Rev’d (Mrs) Joseph Akanbi Lamidi were installed as District Overseer, Zonal Superintendent and Senior Pastor since 2011 to date
In its thirty four years of existence, Lagos Island District did not just grow from a local church to a Zonal Headquarters, it also pioneered many churches. Several Zones have also been carved out of the District, some of which have become District Headquarters. In 2010, Surulere District was carved out of Lagos Island District. In 2015 VGC Missionary District was also carved out of Lagos Island District.
The District is presently made up of (28) churches and Four (4) Zones. To God be the glory the District is still waxing strong and stronger. Shalom!!
